Given that quite a few people have said that they will find disposing of garden waste a problem with the new waste collection service, I'd like to find out if there's any interest in a community composting scheme.
If you don't have a garden or have a small garden, you don't have room for a composter, so if there was one, say at the Bettridge Centre, would you take your recyclable waste there?
The compost generated could either be sold to residents cheaply with the money going to the CGF or similar, or it could be used on community gardening projects.
I've got info from the lady at Aberdeen Forward, which has organised several community composting schemes in Aberdeen.
Hiya, from what I remember the Mearns Leader last week (I think) quoted someone from the Cooncil as saying that they hoped to have a garden waste collection running by the spring. I can't remember the exact words but I did read it that it was a 'going to happen' as opposed to a 'maybe' but I could be wrong
Diane
Diane mentioned this to me. She was unclear whether it's to be individual bins or just periodic garden waste collections, but it seems there's moves afoot to provide something.
garden bins?
Have just read in the paper we might ( note the might) be getting garden bins provided to us from the council!

We haven't got our pile of Newseys. Was I meant to collect them?
Community Composting
Mel,
Picking up on your shredder idea, it might be possible to arrange for the council to send one out on given dates. I'll explore the possibility when I do the contact to them about the concerns re lack of garden waste provision. Also mention it at the CC tonight to see what their views are.
Cheerio!
Have you got the Newseys out yet?
Shredder would be a good idea, although I've no idea how expensive they are. Maybe it would be worth hiring one for a weekend so that everyone could lug all their branches etc to the Bettridge and for a small donation (to cover the hire fee) have it all shredded up.
BUT I can't see why the council aren't providing a way of disposing of garden waste such as this. It's my only bugbear about the new waste system - but that's for a different thread............
Composting
I would certainly use a community compost area .
composting
Good idea but i already have a composter which i bought earlier last year from the council for £10, what i would find more useful is a shredder which breaks branches up into a bark that can be reused in the garden.
That could also be sold.

Apologies
Drat - forgot to log in! That was me posting above.
