Corner Shop

Has anyone been in there this week?? I am just wondering how "business" is there now that Tesco is here??

Corner Shop

Let's hope both shops do manage to prosper. It is fine to have a choice that does not mean leaving the village for Portlethen or Stonehaven.
The wee shop may be quiet just now but the novelty of Tesco will wane in a while for some.
In defence of "tidy profits" made when the now Scotmid was privately owned, may I remind readers that there was always a payback to the community from those profits with good sponsorship of all NVA events.

Scotmid

I have been into Scotmid a couple of times during the week & things were quite quiet. One of the staff said they had been very quiet since Tesco opened. I must admit that I only use the shop for small purchases such as lottery, paper, milk & occasionally some wine & beer. It's difficult to say what will happen in the future but I hope the village can support both Scotmid & Tesco.

Business will continue

But for how long, I don't know.

Since the onset of the Tesco Plan, my wife & I have always agreed, the small shop will continue to trade.

There will be the die hards who refuse to use Tesco, the residents of the lower part of Newtonhill, those who require milk, papers and small turn over stuff that are a shorter walking distance and those who are too infirm to walk up to the top end of the Village, to name but a few.

The shop has for years, had a monopoly on Newtonhill. Their inflated prices have seen them make a tidy profit. Without a doubt, takings will be down, but it's a consumer market & people will buy their products where they are cheaper and more convenient (usually)

Yes

I was in the village shop last night in fact, as I went to buy some juice, wine, crisps and mince pies for a meeting. It's a bit mixed - there was only one other lady in the shop, but she spent quite a lot of money (for a corner shop).

Not sure about how business is going but it was refreshing to take children into Tesco this week and walk around freely. I struggled to actually get into the little shop the other day with a double buggy as there was a car parked up close to the ramp and the bins had been put alongside it, a regular problem when delivery vans are there too. Have long been concerned about the piles of boxes and stock lying around the floor most days in the wee shop and know that some elderly residents in the village have also expressed concern, indeed I believe one did trip over a few months ago. I know my mum, who has slight mobility issues, has not been comfortable walking around the shop for fear of tripping over boxes - not a problem she will be having at Tesco ;-))
