Flyover at Newtonhill

Just wondering when the flyover was built?? Was it built by Barrett/Stewart Milne when the new houses were built or was it built before that??

Thank you.

Thank you

That was extremely helpful - thank you very much :)

Flyover

As a relative newcomer to the village, I have asked Cllr Mollison for the facts re the flyover and copy his response hereunder.
"The campaign to build the flyover predated the Barratt and Stewart Milne developments.
It was taking so long for residents to cross the dual carriageway, we feared that there would be deaths. Thankfully the accidents which did take place did not results in deaths, as far as I can recall. Police said it was a tragedy waiting to happen.
Drivers had to wait up to 40 minutes to get out of Newtonhill. I saw women putting on make-up, people having breakfast, and men shaving.
This took place in the late 80s or early 90s when Newtonhill was much smaller. We knew that one of the consequences would be more houses. It was a price worth paying.
It was a community-led campaign co-ordinated by the village association in conjunction with the community council.
I recall there was a packed public meeting in the assembly hall of the old primary school. Subsequently Grampian Regional Council built the flyover after discussing the plans with villagers. At one point it was proposed that the loop on the west side would have turned north towards the bus stop and what was then a busy petrol station. Villagers pursuaded the council to adopt the current layout.
No doubt others with better memories for dates and so on can furnish further details.
Councillor Ian Mollison (and village association member at that time)"
Useful I hope
